Drunken Cranberry and Cherry Sauce

Sassy and tart, this is a twisted but simple take on the usual cranberry sauce.

2 cups fresh cranberries

1½ cups dried cherries

1¼ cups sweet red wine, or red or white Lillet

¼ cup cranberry vodka

2 tablespoons cherry or cranberry eau de vie

1½ cups maple sugar

1 teaspoon salt

  1. Combine the cranberries, dried cherries, wine or Lillet, vodka, eau de vie, maple sugar, and salt in a medium saucepan set over high heat, and cook, stirring, bring to a boil, and reduce the heat to a simmer. Cover and cook for about 30 minutes, until the fresh cranberries have all popped.
  2. Allow to cool, then transfer to a container, cover, and refrigerate for at least 8 hours, until completely chilled.
