Quick Smoky and Sweet BBQ Sauce

This Kansas City-style sauce is packed with flavor and quick to make.

3 cups ketchup

4 garlic cloves, grated or minced

¼ onion, peeled and studded with a clove

⅓ cup packed dark brown sugar

¼ cup Dijon mustard

2 tablespoon cane syrup or mild honey

1½ tablespoons ancho chili powder

1 tablespoon molasses

1 tablespoon sweet smoked paprika

1 tablespoon ground cumin

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon freshly ground pepper

  1. Combine all of the ingredients in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir well. When it begins to bubble around the edges, lower heat to a simmer. Cook 25 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  2. Remove and discard the onion and cloves. Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. The flavors will strengthen over time.
